Members of the VMBS team are all smiles as they celebrate copping the top corporate team at the third annual VCB Foundation 5K Run/Walk. Olympian Veronica Campbell Brown finds herself nestled in the middle of this sea of yellow.
An enthusiastic team from Victoria Mutual Building Society (VMBS) journeyed to Vere Technical, in Clarendon, for the Veronica Campbell Brown Foundation 5K Run/Walk on Sunday and emerged as the top corporate team among such teams as event sponsors NCB and Juci Patties, as well as Jamalco and Ebony Park Heart Academy.
Commenting on VMBS’ victory, Veronica Campbell Brown marked the event a success and noted her delight over the continuous support the foundation’s major fundraiser has been getting from corporate and other participants since the initiative started in 2016.
“For our third staging we saw an increase in the support from corporate Jamaica, both from the perspective of sponsorship and participating teams. And we are very grateful for this. It was a fun morning of friendly competition. In the end, VMBS outdid the other corporates and they were very excited. But the thing that has humbled me the most is to see that others are sharing in our mission and we are excited about the future of the event,” she said.
Monies raised from the annual 5K will support the foundation’s work, of assisting high school girls with significant financial needs.
The big-hearted eight-time Olympic medallist further stated that she is looking to expand the sponsorship reach of the initiative for future stagings, to ultimately reach more beneficiaries.
“Since the foundation’s inception, we have had a group of graduates; we are currently involved with four schools and plan to broaden our outreach to various entities so that we can include more institutions in the future, and by extension increase the number of girls benefiting from our efforts,” added the 2018 RJRGleaner Iconic Awardee.
“I really want to thank all the sponsors for their partnership, as well as all participants and volunteers for their contribution, and, of course, our gracious host, Vere Technical High School, for accommodating us every year.”
The schools currently benefiting from the VCB Foundation are Troy High School, Irwin High School, St Andrew Technical High School, and the chairman’s alma mater Vere Technical High School.
The VCB Foundation provides educational scholarships to high school girls by providing them with resources they require to remain in school. The girls are supported from grade eight to grade 11.
Event sponsors include Juici Patties, Tropical Blue Natural Spring Water, National Commercial Bank, On Track Management, Adidas, Sherwin Williams, The Jamaica Pegasus, The Write House, and the RJR/Gleaner Communications Group.
