Granville make winning start in St James U-13 tourney
MONTEGO BAY, St James — Granville Primary made a winning start to the defence of their VMBS/St James Football Association Under-13 title, after edging former champions Barracks Road Primary 1-0 in the opening game at the UDC filed on Wednesday.
Leo Campbell, one of a pair of twins who started for Granville Primary, scored the winner early in the game when he converted from the penalty spot.
Thirty-one schools are taking part in the 27th renewal of the competition, including two newcomers in Eagles New Day and Vaughnsfield Primary.
The teams will play in six first-round zones, with the top two advancing to the quarter-finals where they will be divided into four groups of three teams each and, after a round robin competition, the winners of each group will advance to the semi-finals.
The competition’s co-ordinator, Hopeton Gilchrist told the opening ceremony they had “no limits” on the number of teams that could take part in the competition that has become a staple on the football calendar in Montego Bay.
“From the inner city to the rural hill of St James, we welcome any team that wants to take part,” he said.
On Wednesday, Irwin Primary play Bogue at 10:00am, followed by former champions Howard Cooke Primary against MoBay Prep and Flankers against Green Pond.
